Commentary

This is our commentary evaluation on the production of our media product and ancillary texts. Some of the aspect ratio of the shots is not the same as we ran out of time to finish properly editing this piece of footage.

video filters and modifications

filters and modifications we have used so far in our edited rough cut video are:
fade in and out
cross dissolve
slow motion
rewind
fast forward
we changed the speed around

making a youtube account

to help with are blogs we decided to make our group a you tube account so that encoding videos would be easier. this is a print screen of our account :)

Our Green Screen Practice Video

this is our footage that we practiced for green screen, however due to the amount of time we have left we have decided to concentrate on getting the performance footage without green screen, as this would be too much to concentrate on, we thought it would be best to shoot the footage with "stuff" going on behind Adam instead as this will be easier to edit and less time consuming.

Improvements

video by Calvin Harris - Flashback

came across this new video that is out now by Calvin Harris and added it as coincidentally it is exactly what our groups pitch was portraying, for example trying to create, "whats behind the next door" look and as Calvin picks up a photo the morning after it flashbacks, he also is picking up weird objects and is thinking "what happened? why is this here?". In the flashbacks to the photos its clips of friends just hanging out, answering the door, dancing, which are all clips the group have already gathered in our rough cut.
obviously showing camerawork of the band singing and playing instruments are clips the group still needs to film and we have discussed what we need to do and are in the process of gathering the missing footage, the video is showing close ups of Calvin singing, comparing it to our music video we will have close up shots of Adam singing.

knowing the biggest improvement we need to make on our video is to gather the clips of the band, there are a few aspects we could change to make it better, for example more editing with the dancing clips as this is really long at the moment, when we get the rest of our footage it will make it easier to edit all types of clips in and out of each other with contrasting transitions, we also have feedback to make the "past" images appear quicker.
we need to make sure the footage is on time with the beats and rhythm in the music properly.
our bridge is really good at the moment we just need to fill in all the blanks around this section of the video.

Test Footage

The first editing move we made was adding the music.
then after this was done we could start editing, first we played around with was the double vision effect that starts the clip off. This edit is to give a drunken double vision effect the called "echo".
the next was slow motion, however this is hard to see as most of the clips we used were in slow motion however some are even more slowed down, also with the echo effect it speeds the clip up so when we applied that we also had to apply slow motion to get it down to its before speed.
then we played around with color as you can see the lion starts dancing in a sepia view.
then back to its normal color then again when the two characters are playing basketball its shown in black and white.
also taking into account that we had to cut the test footage and only used the clips we wanted, we put it into a storyline of our own; for example it starts off with the whole crew, then it individually shows a character doing some sort of breakdance or cool move then the two characters driving away and waving goodbye. This was not the order we received the footage in, we had to make the clips synchronise with the music and make the music cut out at a particular place so that it sounded right and did not cut out at any time when the artist was actually singing.

Our Presentation

Wednesday, 23 September 2009

The video

Setting / Location - Main setting will be in a house in all various rooms and corners. such as bathrooms, kitchens, bathtub, shower, dining room, bedroom, balcony, sofa, trampoline, swimming pool.

Props - beer cans, vodka, shots glasses, wine bottles, cups, lazer, glow sticks, party poppers, food, drugs (pills and coke) guitars, drums, drum sticks, bongos, tamberine, recorder.
camcorder - vital prop

narrative / abstract - morning after a party when people start waking up, everything is slow and confused, one party go-er walks around the house seeing various different odd things like wasted people in a weird place or some weird object that you wouldn't expect to see also for the music side of things the band will be seen in different camera angles (Adam), then they find a camcorder and rewind it to the start, the footage is of the party and what had happened, this is where we use a special effect, the camera zooms in to the camcorder screen and the smaller screen becomes the main screen, this effect is good because it is reminding viewers of what happened at the party.
we start to discover how people got into the state they are in and how weird objects were including in the party. In the party we include edited scenes of the actual song being sung by Adam and the instruments being played by other people that can actually
then the screen pans back out to show the camera again.
right at the end some weird randomer who is seen throughout the party pops up in an unexpected place like (the American cemetery or long grassed field).

Genre conventions - pop rock - after we looked at other pop rock videos such as "rescue Signals - Every word you said" and "Damaged goods by The Hot Rats" we have found similar contrasts to our ideal video which were, Special effects by the camera editing like slow motion and flashbacks showing two events back and forth, also the use of different colors like sepia and saturated good use of filtering.
the typical outfits of the band and "characters" is indie rock however it doesn't particularly have to be dressed like this in the video, but when showing close ups and long shots of the band playing you can clearly see that this is the most common style of clothing that is being worn.
in our video the idea we have come up with is similar like the special effects - black and white/ sepia, flashes of many different images of the past, and the band playing. with the camera work we will be using a lot of close ups and hand held shots to represent the party go-er using the camcorder they have found.

Informing The Band

Our group had to somehow contact The Band (Supergrass) and ask for their approval to use their song for our music video, we contacted our group on BEBO !!!!!

Our Song Choices

1. La Song by Supergrass
2. Recondition by Autons
3. Dark Is Light Enough by The Duke Spirit

1. La Song by Supergrass we chose this track because of its contrast between the slow pace of the introduction and the faster pace of the chorus and verses and the potential it posed when thinking of music video ideas. Our initial idea for the video is to start with the band members waking up after a house party in strange positions with a sense of confusion. This all happens relatively slowly to match with the slower pace of the music. Someone finds a camera or object that triggers a flash back of what happened the night before. A convention of this genre of music is that performance of the band is required so we thought they could be shown to be playing instruments in odd or unexpected parts of the house. The final shot as the music calms could fast forward back to one of the shots earlier in the video.

2. Recondition by Autons is quite an aggressive song leaving the potential for a darker opening sequence with darkened colours or even the use of black and white in the early evening. The overall idea for this video is for either one group or various age groups of people causing trouble on the streets showing no care for the repercussions. There could also be the inclusion of drug use, sex and alcohol. This shows the stereotypical relationship between drugs and violence and the youth of today.

3. 3. Dark Is Light Enough by The Duke Spirit

The song starts off and its a typical rock and roll genre, rumbling sounds angry guitars, the words are not really related to anything its more about the instruments and backing, therefore we thought that this portrayed concert themes even festival theme loads of people coming together in their wellies and jumping about in the mud, ruining eachothers tents, getting off their face, and jus rockin' n rollin' to the music.
The main idea that we have thought about this song track was of us each playing an instrument up on a stage with the camera viewing us at different angles. Showing the bizarreness of the crowd and the whole idea of festival theme spirit and the festivity of the hole event itself.
