Rough Cut

This is the rough cut for our final video. It contains little to no performance as we are yat to film this. I think there are many areas in which we could improve our video including performance we also need to work with the continuity at the begining when the camera is picked up as there is a person there and then in the next shot they are not. This will have to be re-shot alon with several other party like scenes. There are several areas of black in our rough cut which we aim to fill with more footage of performance and visuals to create a better overall video. There are also several images that have not been shot that i think could be included and may be relevent to the final video and relate to the lyrics of the track. We are going to discuss these as a group in a weeks time.

Filming

As we chose to film on a wednesday during the day a lot of people were in college or doing other things so to begin with we had a little dificulty getting the shots we needed. This has meant that although we have made some shots we are going to have to re-shoot them before our final deadline in order for them to look right in our finished piece. The main aim of our first shoot was to capture as much footage as possible so we had a solid base for the future. This has meant that we have not filmed much performance which is an essential part to this project and will have to be done on a future date. Overall I am pleased with the footage we have gained from this shoot, however I am aware that we have a lot more filming to do and we are going to have to plan carefully after half term in order to get the shots required and meet the deadline we have been set. This gives us several challengesto overcome but also allows us to consider more in depth about what type of performance we want and where we want it to fit in our finished product.

Also, at the moment our footage does not so much resemble a party atmosphere as a gathering of friends having a night in together and having a laugh. Although this was not our initial idea I think it still relates closely to what we storyboarded and planned for but as we could not quite get the footage we desired we decided to go for a slightly different approach. I think the use of shadows on the wall using different coloured lights works well as it not only gives the impression of there being more people there but also gives a feel of everyone being on a different mind level. I am really pleased we managed to get this piece of footage as it was not planned for but has added a very suitable aspect to our video.

indie costume mood boards

Here i have produce some mood boards to get a general feel of how the characters in out music video will dress. The indie clothing style is distinctive, consistent with out song and fairly easy to replicate.
The style includes: floral dresses, skinny jeans and plaid shirts.

Lyrics

Well we're... ruin of fables
As we drink ourselves right under the tables
Well you need an end to yesterday's papers
and tell us that they love us and hate us
...
Cos they're gonna kill us sooner or later
Yeah we really ran and ruined the fables
...climbing up the tower of ...

la-la, la-la, la-la, gotta get inside feeling
la-la, la-la, la-la, gotta get inside feeling

Well they meet in the ruin of fables
They see inside ourselves and what we are make of
Come along and stick on a label
We do the dance of the mashed potato
...
Cos they're superfragilistically-anus
...
... city of angels

la-la, la-la, la-la, gotta get inside feeling
la-la, la-la, la-la, gotta get inside feeling

la-la, la-la, la-la, gotta get inside feeling
la-la, la-la, la-la, gotta get inside feeling

At the moment we do not intend to have our footage as a literal interpretation of the lyrics in the song however we do intend to play on the idea of drinking and having a good time and being young and foolish which is the impression I get from listening to the song and looking at the lyrics. This is being shown through the appearance of a 'party'.

Test Footage

The first editing move we made was adding the music.
then after this was done we could start editing, first we played around with was the double vision effect that starts the clip off. This edit is to give a drunken double vision effect the called "echo".
the next was slow motion, however this is hard to see as most of the clips we used were in slow motion however some are even more slowed down, also with the echo effect it speeds the clip up so when we applied that we also had to apply slow motion to get it down to its before speed.
then we played around with color as you can see the lion starts dancing in a sepia view.
then back to its normal color then again when the two characters are playing basketball its shown in black and white.
also taking into account that we had to cut the test footage and only used the clips we wanted, we put it into a storyline of our own; for example it starts off with the whole crew, then it individually shows a character doing some sort of breakdance or cool move then the two characters driving away and waving goodbye. This was not the order we received the footage in, we had to make the clips synchronise with the music and make the music cut out at a particular place so that it sounded right and did not cut out at any time when the artist was actually singing.

Filming

We have decided to film on Wednesday 14th October during the day. This may cause some problems as darker lighting is required in several of our shots, however we hope to overcome this by closing curtains and lighting the room using a light and different coloured gels. We intend to film at Rosie's house as it is close to college and in town. We also require to use a field for our end shot where the person in costume wakes on their own in a state of confusion. Hopefully we will manage to film these both on the same day as we only have the camera for one night and will otherwise have to wait another week before we can film it. It will not be a problem to film at the house, we just need to find a way to get out of Cambridge with ll our equipment. We were thinking of filming the scene in the field just outside of Cambridge near the Gog Magog hills as this does not involve much travel and is a good open space.

As well as ourselves we also require about 10 other people including the person in costume to act in our video. We need three people to play instruments and act as band members and someone to mime to the track. The rest of the people will act as people at the party with one person dressed in costume.

For filming we wish to use several extras as well as the camera and tripod. We decided to use a light as we will be working in dark rooms sometimes and hopefully this will create an interesting effect in the shot. We then thought about using different coloured gels to create different feelings or moods in a shot selecting red, blue and turquoise. We have also asked for a fish eye lens. Although we can add a fish eye effect in final cut we thought that if we decided we did want to use this in our video then it would have a nicer effect done using the actual effect rather than a filter. We came up with this idea as we were looking back over our blog at the Chris Cunningham, Aphex Twin, videos and as well as liking the slightly surreal twist it puts on the image we also thought it would be good to relate our work back to what we were looking at when we started the project. Hopefully using these extras will give our video a more interesting individual approach.

Props

This is a central part to our video and has been from the start. We hope we can create the right effect with the sofa we have to use.

We hope to have a costume similar to this or at least something that stands out against what everyone else is wearing.

We intend to show all the instruments at some point in the video and are considering using a microphone to show the singer performing although they will be moving around the house. All the instruments will be shown to be played at different points in the video.

Alcohol of various forms will be shown in different contexts throughout. This is important to the beginning of the video as it in a way represents how the house reached it's present state and why no one understands what happened the night before. There could also be reference to drugs, again to emphasise some of the action on screen and create a more 'extreme' party vibe.

The video camera provide a 'window' in to the night before. It is only shown at the beginning of the video but is quite important.

Further Ideas

Having looked at other blogs and thought about our ideas and feedback we have decided to add shots of people getting ready for the party and arriving. This reduces the need for so many scenes of a party which will be quite hard to film. We looked at the Black Eyed Peas video for I Gotta Feeling for some ideas as to how we could film this. We also took some ideas from the video for the party scene. We liked the use of UV paint although we don't think we could do this without causing a lot of mess. The idea of using fewer people and just framing the shots in particular ways appealed to us as not only does it make it easier for us to film but will hopefully create a better effect.

Our Feedback

Looking at the feedback on our blog it's given us an idea of what we need to do and how we could improve it. We have already prepared some test footage but are yet to upload it to our blog showing different effects we could use in our video. This feedback allows us to look at other people's views of our work and development providing outside views we could use for improvement. We will take in to consideration everything that has been said by the other groups and hopefully use it to build on our idea and create a better overall finished product.

Group 27 FeedBack

- Thorough interest has been shown in terms of relations between the music videos and the genres chosen. Although care should be taken not to relate to much to the video as your music video needs to be able to be distinguished from others.
- The storyboards are very easy to read and understand, however they lack detail. The first storyboard doesn't have enough drawings.
-The concept ideas are really good, they give a 'togetherness' feel and a sense of enjoyment.

best of luck!
an overall realy well thought out blog. well done!

Blog Feedback

Your blog is well organised and very detailed with your ideas. You've looked at lots of stuff on how to make your music video conform to typical media conventions, such as posts on intertextuality, other video's related to your own ideas and the auteur theory. Your analysis's are very in-depth and detailed and your moodboards are explanatory of your idea for your music video. Good preparation for the off-chance you wouldnt get your chosen song, with lots of initial ideas for how to make music video's for other tracks. To improve your blog you could add some test footage/photos in preparation for your video and maybe add a couple more pictures to your blog to make it more visual. Overall, your concept for your video is very interesting and looking at all your preparation, we're sure you will do very well actually creating your products.

lovely group photo by the way :)
